Primes - Fixed focal length lenses Zooms - Variable focal length lenses
“A zoom will help you figure out which focal length you lean towards. Once you know that you can buy a fast prime at that focal length.”
Primes over zooms
- Superior image quality - fewer glass elements - sharper images with less distortion and lesser optical imperfections
- Better low-light performance and greater depth of field - primes offer larger maximum apertures (e.g., f/1.4, f/1.8) than zooms, allowing more light to enter the camera
- Portability - primes are generally smaller and lighter
- Pushes creativity - the fixed focal length of prime lenses forces photographers to get creative
- Cheaper when you mostly shoot at fixed lengths
Zooms over Primes
- Flexible focal length (one can punch in to 70mm and get a nice single portrait, then push out all the way to 24 or 35mm to get a nice group shot)
- Less frequent lens changes
- Cost efficient when you do plan to shoot at multiple focal lengths
You can check with your photo app/ Lightroom for the focal length of the shots you shoot at, the mode will give you an idea
